abstract = "This work has as main objective the formulation of an empirical
algorithm to estimate total suspended matter (TSM) in the Northern
part of the Rio Grande do Norte continental shelf, Brazil. This
algorithm is based on a linear regression between MODIS-AQUA
normalized water-leaving radiance at 551nm (nLw_551) and in situ
total suspended matter concentration. In situ TSM were also
compared with estimates obtained with the application of an
existing remote sensing semi-analytical algorithm proposed by
Carder (2004). After the implementation of the models, it was seen
that the correlation method derived polynomial proved to be much
more satisfactory that the method of linear and semi-analytical
model of Carder, because the differences between the average
values in relation to traffic TSM in situ were: 0,035 mg / L for
polynomial model of 4th degree; 0,275 mg / L for the linear model
and 1,551 mg / L for semi-analytical model of Carder. This show
that the use of a global model can lead to inaccurate
interpretations, is necessary to develop regional models.",
